Are You Tossing Silver Scrap, Gold Scrap and Even Platinum Scrap During the Coronavirus Epidemic? . . .

Don’t let valuable precious metals slip through your fingers

A recent trip to our town recycling yard (once called the “town dump”) convinced us that a lot of people are tossing an awful lot of stuff during the time they are staying at home because of Covid-19. They’re cleaning out their basements, attics, garages, and storage rooms. That’s probably a good thing to do. Decluttering and cleaning out are great projects to take on right now. They help us feel like we are making progress and getting organized, in a time when we feel stuck and out of control.

Cleaning Out Is Good, But . . .

On that same trip to the recycling yard, we couldn’t help noticing that people were getting rid of a number of items – electrical devices, mostly – that contained quantities of silver scrap, gold scrap, and even trace amounts of platinum that were worth a decent amount of money.

So before you start tossing, take a look at the following list of common household items that contain precious metals. If you extract those metals (call us at 800-426-2344, we’ll tell you how), you will still have bulky items to get rid of that will clear out your house. But you will also have some extra money in your pocket. In some cases, you will have a lot more money than you expected.

Don’t Just Toss The Following Items . . . They May Contain Silver, Gold and Platinum Scrap

  • Televisions contain gold

  • Computers and computer peripherals like printers and cable modems contain gold, silver, and recyclable base metals like copper

  • Old air conditioners contain thermocouples that can contain silver and platinum

  • Stoves, refrigerators, and other home appliances contain thermocouples that can contain silver and platinum

  • Remote control devices contain gold and silver

  • Old audio components like stereo receivers and amplifiers and even speakers, which contain gold

And Of Course, the Obvious Items . . .

There are certain items in everyone’s home that clearly contain gold or silver that can be profitably recycled. So we doubt that you would ever toss them! But just to be sure, let us mention:

  • Trophies and awards

  • Old items of “costume jewelry” (which can still contain enough gold and silver to offer a good payback)

  • “Cheap” old watches that might have gold-filled cases

  • Old eyeglass frames, which often contain silver and gold

  • Knives, spoons and forks and other items of tableware, which often contain more silver than people realize
