Don’t Give Precious Metals Away when Recycling Scrap

Gold, platinum, silver and rhodium are called precious metals because they are valuable. You already knew that! Yet some people toss them away anyway.

Here are some tips that can prevent you from literally giving them away without realizing it.

Don’t Give Away Gold Dental Scrap

People often do this when they have their dentists replace gold caps, bars, bridges, wires and other dental appliances. If these items are in your mouth, they belong to you. So before giving your dentist permission to replace them, be sure to ask about getting  them back. If you don’t, you can be sure your dentist will recycle them for dollars. Why give them away?

Ask for Scrap Leftovers when Having Rings Resized

No scrap will be left over when you have gold and silver rings made larger, because your jeweler will simply stretch them. But if you need to have those rings made smaller, a small quantity of precious metal will be left over. (Typically, the jeweler will cut a small piece from the rings, bend them back into a round shape, and solder them back together.) So if you are having a ring reduced in size, be sure to ask to have your little piece of scrap returned to you.

The same holds true for solid platinum rings. The issue becomes somewhat more complicated for rings that are only platinum-plated. It is impossible to stretch them to make them larger without cracking their platinum plating. And if you are making them smaller, only a tiny amount of platinum may be left over. Be sure to discuss your options with your jeweler to make sure you are getting your due.

Don’t Toss Dozens of Old Electronic Devices without Considering the Gold They Contain

The amount of gold contained in one old cellphone, computer or remote is worth only a few pennies. But if you are recycling 30, 40, 50 or more devices, you may want to keep that gold and reclaim its value. Call Specialty Metals Smelters and Refiners at 800-426-2344 and talk things over with our experts. Again, why toss gold away?

Don’t Give Away Precious Metals when Scrapping Old Cars

That car you are about to send to the junkyard contains precious metals. There is platinum in its catalytic converter and gold in its onboard computers. It might, or might not, be worth your while to recycle those components. Again, call Specialty Metals Smelters and Refiners at 800-426-2344 to discuss your options and make your wisest choice.
