Cautions and Caveats to Observe when Investing in Ancient Coins

If you are looking for excitement or romance when you are investing in precious metals, few investments can equal ancient Roman or Greek coins. Some of these coins bear the images of historical figures like Julius Caesar or Nero. Others are especially beautiful – true ancient works of art. And then there is the fact that just holding one of these coins in your hand makes you feel like you are in touch with ancient history.

If you live in North America, however, several obstacles can hinder your ability to obtain and profit from these coins. One is the fact that they come from far away and can only be obtained from dealers and other sources that are located at some distance from where the coins were found. A second impediment is the fact that counterfeit coins are not at all uncommon.

Another consideration is that the value of these ancient coins typically resides in their collectible and historical value, not in the precious metals they contain. But if the idea of investing in these coins appeals to you, here’s some advice on buying them safely.

Work with an Established, Reputable Coin Dealer

One such dealer is Forum Ancient Coins. You will find extensive historical information about every coin they are selling – it’s a real education in what ancient coins are all about. And if you decide to buy, you will find a selection of coins that range from extremely expensive to surprisingly affordable – some fascinating coins are available for less than $50.00. And the authenticity of all coins is guaranteed.

Buy from An Online Auction Site Like eBay

You can find ancient Roman and Greek coins for sale on various online marketplaces and auction websites. However, exercise caution when buying online, as there is a high risk of encountering counterfeit coins. We recommend buying from reputable dealers instead.

Buy at Coin Shows

Coin shows and numismatic conventions often feature dealers and collectors who specialize in ancient coins. These events can be a great place to explore and purchase coins of interest. But again, buy only from well-established dealers that guarantee the authenticity of what they sell, and which will buy back coins you have bought that are found to be counterfeit.

Buy at Estate Sales

Some individuals inherit collections of ancient coins from family members or friends. It's worth inquiring within your own network to see if anyone has such collections they might be willing to sell or share. And check listings online and in local news sources for estate sales. Bear in mind it is generally up to you to assume the risk and believe that the coins you buy are genuine.

Travel and Buy at Antiquities Markets

In regions with a rich history of Roman and Greek civilizations, such as parts of Europe and the Mediterranean, you may find ancient coins for sale in local antiquities markets. Bear in mind that it is often risky to buy from these sources.

Use Your Metal Detector

Of course, you will not find Greek or Roman coins if you are using your metal detector in the U.S. or Canada. (You might, however, find some extremely valuable coins that were minted on our shores!) But metal detector enthusiasts sometimes find ancient coins while searching for buried treasures in areas with historical significance. Always obtain proper permits and follow local laws and regulations when metal detecting.
