You Can Make a Surprising Amount of Money Recycling Platinum Wire, Gold Wire and Silver Wire


A few years ago, it was time to replace the muffler/silencer on a riding mower. The company that owned it ordered a new muffler and yanked the old one off. At that point, the owner noticed that it had been installed by wrapping wire around one of the pipes that came out of the old muffler. 

That wire, which was about two feet long and weighed about 2/10 of a Troy Ounce, turned out to be made of pure platinum. It was worth more than $200.00. 

Now, why had someone used $200 worth of platinum wire to install a $40.00 muffler on a rider mower? We have no idea. But at some point, someone who was installing that muffler reached into a drawer, pulled out a roll of wire, and just used it because it was handy. 

That illustrates the point that precious metal wire can end up in all sorts of unexpected places, so it pays to keep your eyes open. 

Test Before You Toss

Platinum wire, silver wire, and even gold wire can turn up in many places. Sometimes you will find them in an unexpected place like wrapped around a pipe in a lawnmower. Most often, you are likely to find a half-used roll hiding in a drawer in an old jewelry store, factory, or jewelry repair shop. 

But you are also likely to find rolls and lengths of wire in these places . . . 

  • In caches of supplies that were owned by amateur jewelry makers and other crafters.

  • In home workshops that were used by people who liked to do home and equipment repairs.
