We just read a terrific article, “50 Metal Detecting Tips that Find Gold,” on the Discover Detecting blog. It’s jam-packed with great advice on how to use a metal detector to find much more gold on every outing you make.

Whether you’re new to metal detecting or an experienced user, you will want to read this article, which contains advice from experts who really know the ins and outs of using detectors. Here are some of the tips and insights from the post – some of them unusual – that can dramatically improve your experience as a user of a detector.

Research Your Local Area

Every area, including yours, is home to geological features you should know about that indicate possible locations of gold, deposits of quartz, and black sand, not to mention the presence of old mines. Getting to know them will increase your ability to search in the right locations for gold.

And according to the post, the top eight places to find gold in the U.S. are:

  • American River, California

  • Fairbanks, Alaska

  • Black Hills, South Dakota

  • Northern Nevada

  • Pike’s Peak, Colorado

  • Rogue River, Oregon

  • Dahlonega, Georgia

  • Feather River, California

Use a Pinpointer Detector Too

These are miniature detectors that help you dig a small hole and quickly find the piece of metal that your bigger detector alerted you to.

Learn How to Tune Your Detector

The post refers to this process as “ground balancing,” which helps your detector lead you through all the cluttered deposits in the soil to the gold you are looking for. How do you do it? Carefully read the manual that came with your detector.

Know the Laws that Apply in the Area

Are you sure you know whether or not you own the metals you find in the area you are searching? Be sure to know:

Hunt with Your Headphones On

They block outside noise and help you identify the sound your detector makes when it detects gold targets underground.

Take a Gold Sample with You

It could be a gold nugget or a gold ring or other small piece of jewelry. Glue it to something like a poker chip so you will not lose it. Then place it on the ground and pass your metal detector over it while listening on your headphones. The sound you hear will like the sound your detector will make while you are prospective and find gold – and it is like to be different from the sound generated when you pass your detector head over patches of ground where no gold is present.
