How Much Gold Does a Super Bowl Ring Contain?
Your answers about high-value sports rings answered!
Back in 2014, a gang of thieves broke into the Yogi Berra Museum in Little Falls, New Jersey and stole two American League Most Valuable Player plaques and some of the World Series rings that Yogi had been awarded during is long and storied career as a Yankee. At the time, the plaques were estimated to be worth as much as $350,000 each, and the rings were said to be worth more than $40,000 apiece.
Much of that value was assigned because of the historical value of those items, not because of the amount of gold they contained. We really hope that the thieves didn’t melt down those rings or have the gold recycled from those plaques, which were part of baseball history.
But what if they did? How much gold did those rings contain? And since we have just witnessed the Superbowl, let’s ask a related question. if you happen to come into possession of a Super Bowl ring, how much gold does it contain?
We went looking for answers, and here is what we found.
How Much Is the Content of a World Series Ring Worth?
You have to remember that value resides not only in the gold that these rings contain. They also have jewels mounted in them. Also, the team that has gotten into the World Series, not the MLB governing organization, designs the rings that it gives to its players. So their design and content change year by year.
But here’s one example. Back in 2015, the World Series rings that the Dodgers awarded to its players were studded with diamonds and sapphires. The rings themselves were made of 18K yellow gold. All in all, those contents added up to an estimated material value of about $20,000. But due to their collectible value, the Dodgers assigned each of them a retail value of $50,000.
The design and craftmanship that went into the making of each ring also contributed to that $50,000 value. So the thing to bear in mind is that a lot contributes to the value of each ring. We doubt that you will come into possession of a World Series ring. But if you do, remember to contact a dealer and sell it as a collectible item, not as something to be melted down.
How about Super Bowl Rings?
Similar considerations come into play with Super Bowl rings. According to “Here’s How Much a Super Bowl Ring Costs and How It’s Made,” a 2022 article that Charlotte Edmonds wrote for South Florida News, the value of Super Bowl rings that were awarded to Tampa Bay in 2021 was $35,000. That value resided in both the gemstones that those rings contained and in the rings themselves.
But of course other factors come into play when setting the value. If you happen to get your hands on one that was awarded to Tom Brady, that will add a lot to its value. And of course, how would you ever get your hands on one of those?
How About Replica Rings?
Over the years, companies have jumped in to sell replica rings to fans of various sports teams. You can, for example, buy a replica of a World Series or Super Bowl ring.
So, what are those replicas worth? In general, not much! Most are made of base metal that are plated with a thin layer of gold, or with other gold-toned metals. Some are even coated with yellow lacquer that is applied over a plating of silver or even zinc.
So be aware that if someone is trying to sell a World Series or Super Bowl or other commemorative rings, don’t be fooled. The odds are very slim that it is a genuine ring that was given to a player who participated in those fabled events. If you love the team that that ring commemorates, go ahead and wear it with pride. Just don’t expect it to be worth much.
