Why Holiday Gifts You Got in the Past Could Be Well Worth Recycling Today
Claiming the Gold . . .
Christmas always brings a lot of new presents into my house. It’s a great time of year.
But while I was shopping this week, I started to think about some of the presents I got in years past. Some of them are still in their original boxes, unopened! Wouldn’t this be a great time to pull those old presents out and decide to start using them now and if not, whether to sell them?
It could also be a time to remove printed circuit boards from some of them and reclaim the gold and silver they contain. Maybe you are like me and have old items lying around that could contain precious metals that can be removed and recycled profitably.
Be On the Lookout
Look around your home for old holiday gifts that are lightly or never used, which can contain gold and other precious metals. Some items to be on the lookout for include:
Computers and computer peripheral devices like printers, modems, and scanners.
DVD and CD players and VCRs.
Heaters, humidifiers, and air conditioners.
Cameras and camcorders. Even big old pre-digital models can contain a few dollars worth of gold.
Digital photo frames, which were a “hot” gift only a few years ago.
Car-related gadgets, including those old plug-in navigation devices, dash cams, radar detectors and other gadgets that are now no longer in vogue.
Stereo equipment of all kinds.
Flatscreen and other televisions, and computer monitors too.
Jewelry you got but never used. (I have a gold-plated ID bracelet that an aunt of mine sent me that is still in its box.)
Remote controls.
Game consoles.
And Then There’s the Weird Stuff
I have, still in its original box, a small camera and a display screen that together serve as a backup camera for a car. (My new car has one built in, so why do I need this one?) I also have a small wallet-sized device my mother-in-law gave me that can store hundreds of digital photos. (Now that my phone does all that, I know I will never use this gizmo.)
You get the idea! Poke around, pull out those unwanted electronic devices and recycle the gold they contain.
How? Just call our precious metal recycling team at 800-426-2344 and tell them you have electronic scrap you would like to recycle. It's a simple and quick process that can make your holidays just a little bit happier.
