Hidden Value in Materials and Metals You Didn’t Know You Could Recycle

Have you been so focused on recycling gold, silver and platinum scrap that you have let the value of other metals and materials slip through your fingers?

It can happen. Investors who focus on extracting gold from electronic devices are one common example. They’ll extract the gold and then toss the rest of the devices, neglecting a variety of materials that are worth something.

What are these extra materials, and what are they worth? In today’s post, we are going to find out.

Aluminum

Okay, aluminum isn’t sexy or exciting. It’s lightweight, it can be found in many places, including electronic devices and appliances. Also, if you rip the aluminum siding off your house or find a pile of old aluminum cans, their value can add up.

  • Aluminum is worth about 50 cents/pound. Not a fortune, but why toss it?

Copper

The value depends on what kind of copper scrap you have.

  • Wire with the insulation still on is worth about $1.00/pound.

  • Bare copper wire with no insulation is worth about $3.00/pound.

  • Clean copper tubing of any size is also worth about $3.00/pound.

Brass

You’ll usually find brass in the form of castings.

  • Brass of any kind is worth about $1.50/pound.

Steel

There are many kinds of steel. You need a lot of this stuff to put much money in your pocket, but still  . . .

  • Steel is worth about $200/ton.

Iron

Have you got a lot of iron scrap? Maybe you have bits and pieces of angle iron that you found in a manufacturing facility.

  • Iron is worth about $140/ton.

Plastics

You’re recycling plastic bottles already. So why would you just toss the plastic parts of the electronic and other devices you are recycling? They will probably end up in landfills. Even if you can’t make money recycling small plastic bits and pieces, you can recycle them responsibly.
