There’s Silver in the Old Black and White Photos You Just Found

How much? Call us to find out

You’re bound to find old black and white photographs in nearly every junk or antique store you visit. You might find one nicely framed old photo hanging on a wall. Or you might find a cardboard box that’s chock full of prints on paper, gathering dust in a corner.

When you find old photos, don’t pass them by. They may contain silver.

You might be thinking that silver is trading at low prices, so why bother collecting silver or silver scrap? Granted, silver is trading at slightly less than $25. But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t collect it and send it to Specialty Metals Smelters and Refiners to be tested and reclaimed, for a very simple reason – it is often possible to buy a very large quantity of old photos or old negatives at give-away prices. If you can scoop up 25 or 40 pounds of them for a few dollars, you could be smiling soon because of the profit you made.

Where Silver Can Be Found in and around Old Photos

  • In sterling silver frames, which were commonly used to display photos in years past.

  • In the old black and white photos themselves, which contain silver. Note that the older the photo, the more silver it is likely to contain.

  • In negatives, which contain large quantities of silver. Note that unexposed old film contains silver too.

  • In glass negatives too, which are coated with an emulsion that contains silver. Think you can’t find these items? Think again. A few years ago, a man we know found nearly 100 pounds of glass negatives in a box in a junk shop in Newark, New Jersey.

And Don’t Overlook Collectible Value!

We are in the business of reclaiming and recycling precious metals, not dealing in collectibles or antiques. But we would like to point out that old photographs, as well as film and glass negatives, can have collectible value that exceeds the worth of the metals they contain. So think twice before recycling items that could have collectible or historical value.

But if you conclude that the items you have found are good candidates for recycling, be sure to call our precious metal recycling consultants at 800-426-2344. We are here to tell you how to turn old photos into bright new cash.
