Is Your Nostalgia About Precious Metals Costing You a Fortune?
Is nostalgia standing between you and a lot of money?
We apologize if that question is rude, or of we are being impolite by asking it. But the fact is that many people are losing money (or delaying getting it) by remaining stuck in the past.
Here are just two examples of the pattern:
Failing to sell or recycle old engagement rings. We were in touch with one married woman who, for some reason, still owned two platinum engagement rings from engagements that came and went in the days before she met and fell in love with her current husband. (She had offered to return the rings to her previous fiancés, but they had not wanted to take them back.) Now into her marriage, did she have any great nostalgic reason to hang onto those old rings? Not really. And when she stopped to consider the question, she sold them for a total of nearly $1,200. That sum of money was a lot greater than the memories that were tied up in those rings.
Failing to reclaim the gold from heirloom pieces of jewelry. A woman had inherited a Victorian brooch that had belonged to her grandmother. It was old-fashioned, something that looked out of place today. Testing determined that it contained nearly $300.00 worth of gold. So the woman who inherited it reclaimed the gold it contained and had it fashioned into a lovely charm that she wore on a chain around her neck. “The charm helps me think of my grandmother every day, unlike that old brooch that was stuck in a jewelry box,” the woman says. So again the question is, how much is your nostalgia preventing you from doing the right thing with items you have inherited?
Living for years with a case full of inherited silverware. Sometimes people inherit beautiful boxes full of gorgeous silver table settings that they want to keep polished and use for special occasions. But even more often, people inherit silver tableware that they don’t like, that is outmoded in style, and that they would never think of using. For example, one woman inherited a box of Gorham silverware, dating from about 1900. Would she ever use it? No, it just didn’t appeal to her. Should she send it to us to melt down and reclaim its silver? No, there were collectors out there who would pay more for it than what the silver it contained was worth. So she sold it for about $1,100.00 to one of them, which made her feel good. One thing for certain? She wasn’t feeling too good about letting the silverware sit unused in a closet.
