Who near you buys gold-filled jewelry, gold-plated jewelry, solid-gold jewelry, gold scrap and other gold items?
Those questions might be the first to come to mind when you have gold items that you want to sell. But did you know that there are other, more important questions?
Let’s look at those questions and consider how by asking them, you increase your ability to put more money in your pocket when you recycle or sell gold.
Question One: What Are You Selling?
Consider how powerful this very simple question is, because . . .
If you don’t know exactly what you are selling, you cannot get a fair price for it
The message is, unless you know exactly what you are selling or refining, you stand a good chance of being paid too little for it. Let’s say, for example, that you are selling a dozen old pieces of jewelry. What are they exactly? Are they made of 18K solid gold? Are they gold-plated, or gold-filled? What do they weigh individually, and as a lot? Are steel pins, faux glass gemstones or other “extras” contained in what you are trying to sell?

There are pawn shops, coin and bullion dealers (if coins and bullion are what you are selling), “we buy gold” stores that you pass on the road, and maybe even your local jewelry store. The question is, are you selling to an individual or business that is honest? To one that has been in business for a long period of time? Whose reputation you can check out online? Who belongs to, or is accredited by, organizations like the Jewelers Board of Trade, Dun and Bradstreet, or the Better Business Bureau?
It's obvious, but selling to well-established businesses with the right credentials dramatically increases the chances that you will be treated honestly and receive a fair price for what you are selling.
Question Three: Why Are You Selling?
This question might not be as critically important as the two questions above but answering it can help you get more money when you sell your gold. If you are selling quickly because you need to raise cash, for example, that means that you might have to accept a lower price for your gold jewelry and scrap. (Being in a rush puts you at a disadvantage when negotiating with a buyer.) If on the other hand you are gradually building the value of a number of your different investments, perhaps you are in less of a hurry to sell your gold. That means you can talk prices, bide your time, and sell later on, at a time when you can sell at something that is closer to the current price that gold is trading for.
Being able to say, “I am not in a hurry” puts you in a more powerful position to get more money for your gold.
