But what has changed in the years since we published that post?
The short answer to that question is that all of the advice that blog post contains is still relevant today. But if you want to get started making money in catalytic converters, we would encourage you to start soon, because the following trends are at work.
Trend One: The Use of Electric Cars Is Growing
Hybrid cars (like the successful Toyota Prius), which still use small gasoline engines, continue to use classic catalytic converters. But every year, auto makers (including BMW, Fiat, Honda, Tesla and VW) are introducing growing numbers of all-electric plugin cars. These purely electric cars do not use gasoline engines and do not have catalytic converters.
The lesson is that although the supply of used catalytic converters is as large as it was five or six years ago, the supply is likely to dwindle in the years ahead as all-electric cars become more popular. So if you want to cash in on the supply of used catalytic converters, the time to start is now.
Trend Two: It Is Becoming More Difficult to Obtain Large Numbers of Catalytic Converters
Back in 2014, it was easier to approach franchised muffler shops and negotiate to buy their supplies of used catalytic converters. Today, the big muffler chains have contracted with recycling companies that buy their used cat converters in bulk. That makes it more difficult for small precious metal recyclers to buy used units from muffler shops that are part of the bigger chains.
However, it is still possible to contract to buy used catalytic converters from independent muffler shops and auto repair facilities, as well as from automotive recycling yards. (Remember that in order to have Specialty Metals recycle your catalytic converters, you need to send us at least 500 at a time.)
So again, start soon to negotiate agreements to buy catalytic converters from independent businesses in your area. Your ability to do that in the future could be reduced.
Trend Three: The Use of Catalytic Converters in Generators Seems Paused to Fall
Environmental laws are already causing a reduction in the use of the diesel and gasoline-powered generators that are used in industry, hospitals and homes. As we publish this post, Tesla and other companies are already marketing large storage batteries that “kick in” when utility-sourced electricity is interrupted.
Again, the message is that although the supply of non-automotive catalytic converters remains strong, that is poised to change. And again, the lesson for individuals who want to profit from recycling catalytic converters is to start now. It is one of those, “make hay while the sun shines” situations that will not last forever.
