Can You Still Make Money by Recycling Computers?

A customer called us recently and asked, “Can you still make money by recycling computers now that the age of desktops seems to be over? It’s not worth recycling laptops, is it?”

Those are good questions. After all, yesterday’s big desktops did usually contain more gold than today’s slim and trim laptops. Plus, those older machines usually had modems, hard drives and other peripheral devices installed that contained even more gold. Large old laptops that were packed with peripherals sometimes contained gold that was worth as much as $30, sometimes even more.

But you can still make a significant amount of money recycling computers - both old desktops and newer laptops too. Here are some of the reasons why . . .

  • It is still possible to find big batches of old laptops. They can sometimes be found in storerooms at schools, businesses, and hospitals. They are also being thrown into electronics collection areas at town recycling centers. If you can get your hands on 50, 100, or 500 of them and send their circuit boards to us for recycling, you can make a lot of money. The boards from 100 computers could yield as much as $3,000 worth of gold.  And you might be able to get older computers for free, just by offering to haul them away.
  • The circuit boards found inside a single newer laptop can contain gold worth between $15.00 and $25.00. That’s not as much gold as you can typically find in a big old laptop, but it is hardly chump change - especially if you can get your hands on 50, 100 or 500 of them.
  • Don’t overlook tablets either. The circuit boards found inside discarded tablets can contain gold that is worth between $5.00 and $15.00. Why would anyone walk away from $15.00 worth of gold?
