Smart Lessons from Urban Legends about Precious Metals

Urban legends are stories – usually untrue - that are so weird that people keep repeating them and sending them around via email. They tend to take on lives of their own – some people even think they really happened.

Some of these tales have become classics, like the one about the woman who tried to dry her poodle in a microwave oven, with awful results. Another popular one is about a porta-potty that rolled end-over-end down a hill and coated the screaming person inside with the contents of its tank. And what about the one about a man who tried to crawl into his house through a pet door, got stuck, starved to death, and was found six months later? (Or was eaten by his Schnauzer, it depends on the version you heard.)

There are even urban legends about precious metals. Here are three we have heard…

There are better places to store your precious metals than inside your own body. Find out about a Specialty Metals Smelters and Refiners Pool Account today.

  • While traveling abroad, a woman became scared that her expensive wedding ring would be stolen by pickpockets or hotel thieves. So she swallowed it. The ring lodged in her innards, she ended up in a hospital operating room, where she got her ring back… the hard way.
  • Before driving through a customs checkpoint, a smuggler hid some silver and gold bullion bars by hiding them in a plastic bag, tying a string to it, and dropping it into the gas tank of his Lamborghini. He then drove across the border and sure enough, customs agents never found the booty he had hidden. But when he got into the other country, the string had broken and he had to remove his car’s gas tank and cut it in half before he could get his hands on the goods. He learned the hard way that removing and replacing a gas tank in a Lamborghini costs a ton of money… just a little less than the value of the bullion he had hidden.
  • A man bought an engagement ring for his fiancée and, just to be sure it would be safe from theft, drilled a hole in the wall in his house, hid the ring there, and then plastered up the hole. Just before he proposed to his fiancée, he used a hammer to break open the wall and found that the ring was no longer there – it had fallen somewhere behind the wall. He had to demolish most of a wall before he found the ring and by that time, his fiancée was no longer interested in marrying him.
